The Body in Architecture and Media

The body in architecture and media

I picked out the sentence in the reading, The Emergent Rules by Charles Jencks, that reads, “Almost all of the new classists incorporate ornament, and moldings suggestive of the human body”(285). I want to further discuss this in class tomorrow because everything in the media and in our society relates to the body. Whether it is in ads, TV, or even architecture a lot of what circulates in our media driven society is related to the human body. Anywhere in America the human body is eroticized, idealized, idolized, and has a huge impact on everything and everyone.

In addition, the author discusses the architecture and makes reference to the Thematic House and states, “The head, shoulders, arms, belt and legs are as much arches and windows as they are anatomical parts.. It favours a subliminal anthropomorphism, but promotes an explicitness in detail and ornament” (285). By examining and observing the Thematic House on page 287 it is clear to the reader what Jencks is referring too. The house is a clear demonstration of the human body and the head, shoulders, belt and legs are clearly outlined. It definitely adds some interesting elements and visual components which are ascetically pleasing.

Also, I found this other quote intriguing as well, “In an age when architects and artists are often at a loss for legitimate subject matter, the human presence remains a valid departure point”(286). This is true and makes sense because the human body is such a strong, valid form of art that is often incorporated into literature, architecture, and all types of media today. So much is in reference to the body. Obviously, since we connect with others through body language, expression of self, and reproduction. So, I think it’s a significant element we should explore further in reference to this entire reading.
