Fear

Today during our discussion on postmodernism, the term that most stood out to me was our obsession with fear. As we discussed certain events that have taken place over the years, I could not help but connect the continual influence that fear played in each event. The Holocaust for example, was one event that truly captivated my attention. I did not live through it, witness the events or have any relatives affected by it, however, through films, books, and personal accounts from people, I myself would be terrified if something like that would come and repeat itself in my generation. Unfortunately it was then I realized, although it is not happening anywhere near me, the genocide in Darfur is certainly similar to the events of the Holocaust and yet, like we did to Germany, are not doing all we can to prevent these horrendous events from happening.

Our society is in a continual state of fear. Going back to our first class discussion, we were asked what we thought post modernity meant. I feel that post modernity should be a way of futuristic thinking that can discover a way for our society to break away from our state of fear and branch out into other areas of opportunity like medicine and future technologies. Understandably so, we do not live in a place where failure is never an option but if we can find a way to culturally connect everyone’s positive ideas to improve human life, than I think that we all can essentially take a step in the direction of eliminating that fear we all experience.
